Jagjit Singh, born Jagmohan Singh); (8 February 1941 – 10 October 2011) was a prominent Indian Ghazal singer, songwriter and musician. Known as "the Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife, another renowned Indian Ghazal singer Chitra Singh in the 1970s and 1980s. Their combination album comprising music from the films, ''Arth'' and ''Saath Saath'' is the HMV's largest selling combination album of all time. ''Sajda (An Offering, 1991)'', Jagjit Singh's magnum opus double album with Lata Mangeshkar holds the same record in non-film category. He had sung in numerous languages. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2003.

Singh is credited for the revival and popularity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by choosing poetry that was relevant to the masses and composing them in a way that laid more emphasis on the meaning of words and melody evoked by them. In terms of Indian Classical music, his style of composing and ''Gayaki'' (singing) is considered as ''Bol-pradhan'', one that lays emphasis on words. He highlighted this in his music for films such as ''Prem Geet'' (1981), ''Arth'' and ''Saath Saath'' (1982), and TV serials ''Mirza Ghalib'' (1988) and ''Kahkashan'' (1991). Jagjit Singh is considered to be the most successful ghazal singer and composer of all time in terms of both critical acclaim and commercial success. With a career spanning over five decades and a repertoire comprising over 80 albums, the range and breadth of his work has been regarded as genre-defining. He is the only composer and singer to have composed and recorded songs written by Prime Minister - Atal Behari Vajpayee - also a critically acclaimed poet - in two albums, ''Nayi Disha'' (1999) and ''Samvedna'' (2002).

Singh's 1987 album, ''Beyond Time'', was the first digitally recorded release in India. He was regarded as one of India's most influential artistes. Together with sitar legend Ravi Shankar and other leading figures of Indian classical music and literature, Singh voiced his concerns over politicisation of arts and culture in India and lack of support experienced by the practitioners of India's traditional art forms, particularly folk artists and musicians. He also lent active support to several philanthropic endeavors such as the library at St. Mary's School, Mumbai, Bombay Hospital, CRY, Save the Children and ALMA.

Early life and career

Jagjit Singh was born on 8 February 1941 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India. His birth name was Jagmohan but this was changed to Jagjit after his parents sought the advice of a member of the Sikh Namdhari sect. His parents were themselves Sikhs, called Amar Singh and Bachan Kaur, and had several other children, with sources variously reporting the number between six and eleven.

Educated initially at Khalsa High School and Sri Ganganagar Government College, Singh obtained an arts degree from DAV College at Jalandhar and then a post-graduate degree in history from Kurukshetra University in Haryana. Throughout this time, and as a consequence of a natural talent that was spotted by his father, Singh learned music both in Sikh temples and from musicians such as Pandit Chaganlal Sharma and Ustad Jamaal Khan, both of whom were trained in classical Indian music. He performed on radio and on stage, as well as composing some material, although he subsequently claimed that his father, who was a government employee, had hoped that he would become an engineer. On another occasion his memory was that his father aspired for him to become a bureaucrat, and that his siblings also were encouraged musically.

In March 1965, and without the knowledge of his family, Singh moved to Mumbai, where there were many opportunities for music artists because of the Bollywood film industry. He obtained work initially as a singer of advertising jingles and later progressed to playback singing. In the same year he persuaded the record company HMV to produce an EP, and he also altered his Sikh image by abandoning his turban, shaving and cutting his hair. His first film role was in ''Dharati Na Chhoru'', a Gujarati production by Suresh Amin.

Fame

Singh was still struggling to make a living in 1967 when he met the Bengali-born Chitra Dutta. She was also a jingle singer, and was unhappily married with a daughter. She subsequently divorced and then married Singh in December 1969. Following the birth of their son, Vivek, the couple performed as a singing duo but it was not until the 1976 release of an album entitled ''The Unforgettables'' that they found significant, and surprising, success. In the interval, the primary difficulty for them had been that the ghazal music genre was dominated by Muslim artists, and especially those from Pakistan.

''The Unforgettables'', which was the couple's first LP, was an unconventional recording and it turned them into stars. The song ''Baat Niklegi'' from the album achieved great popularity for Singh and his wife. ''The Independent'' described it in 2011 as "ground-breaking ... it became a transformative, before-and-after milestone in the history of Indian popular and ghazal music. It remains that." Using modern arrangements, it consists of ten tracks that include two on which they sang as a duo and the remainder equally split between Jagjit and Chitra singing the lead. ''The Independent'' further noted that "This format of solo and duet performances from the first commercially successful husband-and-wife team in Indian popular music proved astonishingly successful." Jagjit explained that "I was determined to polish up the genre and make it more acceptable to modern tastes, so chose simple poems and set them to simple tunes. I also introduced western instrumentation to make them livelier." Thereafter, the couple worked both on solo and joint musical projects and performed concerts worldwide. There was also success from involvement with the film industry and they amassed a considerable wealth, while Jagjit became known as "the Ghazal king".

Jagjit Singh's work in film encompassed playback singing for productions such as ''Arth'', ''Saath Saath'' and ''Premgeet''. He also composed all of the songs for the latter, as well as for the TV serial ''Mirza Ghalib'' that was based on the life of the eponymous poet, Mirza Ghalib.

Among their subsequent duo recordings of the 1970s were ''Shiv Kumar Batalvi – Birha da Sultan'' (1978), ''Live in Concert at Wembley'' (1979) and ''Come Alive'' (1979). Of those released in the 1980s, ''Ecstasies'' (1984) has been described as "one of their finest". The joint projects ceased in 1990 when their eighteen year-old son, Vivek, was killed in a road accident. Chitra felt unable to sing following these events. Monica, Chitra's daughter from her first marriage, committed suicide in 2009.

Although Jagjit continued to work and to have success after Chitra withdrew from public life he, too, was affected by the death of Vivek. ''The Guardian'' notes that he "suffered from deep depression and his anguish was often evident in his live performances." Aside from occupying himself with solo projects, which he performed in several languages, he also collaborated with Lata Mangeshkar on an album entitled ''Sajda'', an Urdu word meaning "prostration".

On 10 May 2007, in the presence of numerous political and diplomatic luminaries at an event held in the Central Hall of the Parliament of India, Jagjit Singh rendered Bahadur Shah Zafar's famous ghazal ''Lagta nahin hai dil mera'' to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Death

Singh toured the UK in 2011 and was due to perform with Ghulam Ali in Mumbai but suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on 23 September 2011. He was in a coma for over two weeks and died on 10 October 2011 at Lilavati Hospital, in Mumbai. He was cremated the following day at Chandanwadi Crematorium in Mumbai.

A number of tributes have been paid to Singh after his death, and some tried to encash his popularity which was criticised by his wife.

Awards

In 2003, Singh was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, by the Government of India

In 1998, Jagjit Singh was awarded Sahitya Academy Award, a literary honor in India. He was awarded this literary honor for popularizing the work of Mirza Ghalib.

Ravi Teja (born Bhupatiraju Ravi Shankar Raju on 26 January 1968) is an Indian Telugu film actor. He won the Nandi Award for Best Actor for the film ''Neninthe'' in 2008. He has acted in other films including ''Avunu Valliddaru Ista Paddaru'', ''Idiot'', ''Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi'', ''Venky'', ''Bhadra'', ''Vikramarkudu'', ''Krishna'', ''Kick'', and ''Mirapakaay''. These successful films have established him within a short period of time as one of the leading actors in Tollywood.

Early life

Ravi Teja was born as Bhupatiraju Ravishankar Raju to father Bhupatiraju Rajgopal Raju and mother Rajya Lakshmi Bhupatiraju on 26 January 1968 in the Indian village of Jaggampeta, Andhra Pradesh, India. Ravi Teja's father was a pharmacist and mother was a homemaker. He is the eldest of three sons and the other two Bharath and Raghu are also actors. Ravi Teja spent most of his childhood in Northern India because his father used to move very often due to his work. Due to that, his schooling was done in Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai and Bhopal. Ravi Teja completed his schooling at N.S.M. public school. Later on he moved to Vijayawada along with his family and completed his Bachelors in Arts at Siddhartha Degree College. From early child hood Ravi Teja had dreamt of acting in films. As a result, in 1988 he went to Chennai to start his career in films.

Personal life

Ravi Teja got married to Kalyani in 2002. The couple have two children, Mokshadha (b. 2003) and Mahadhan (b. 2006). He is known to be good friends with Puri Jagannadh.

Career

Early career (1990-1996)

In the following years of his arrival to Chennai, Ravi Teja struggled to get even a small opportunity to prove himself at acting. Strong willed, Ravi never gave up on his dream to be an actor. Y. V. S. Chowdary and Gunasekhar were his roommates during struggling days Finally after few years of struggle, he began his career with small roles in films like ''Karthavyam'' (1991), ''Chaitanya'' (1991) and ''Aaj Ka Goonda Raj'' (1992). After gaining few years of experience, Ravi became an assistant director. He worked in both television and films. As an assistant director, he worked in several Bollywood as well as Telugu projects including ''Prathibandh'', ''Aaj Ka Goondaraj'', and ''Criminal''. He met Krishna Vamsi and worked as an assistant director under him for the 1996 hit film ''Ninne Pelladutha''. Vamsi also gave Ravi an opportunity to act in a small role in that film. He continued to work as an assistant director for few other films.

''Sindhooram'', ''Nee Kosam'' and breakthrough (1997-2000)

In 1997, while still working as an assistant director, Ravi got an opportunity to act in the film ''Sindhooram'' directed by Krishna Vamsi. Vamsi cast Ravi as one of the lead actors. The film was critically acclaimed and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. Ravi Teja's performance was critically acclaimed and was appreciated by the movie-goers. This was the turning point for Ravi's acting career.

Following the fame he got, he continued acting in small yet significant roles in films like ''Seetharamaraju'', ''Padutha Teeyaga'', ''Manasichhi Choodu'' and S. V. Krishna Reddy's ''Premaku Velayara''. He became well known to Telugu movie-goers with these films and was acclaimed for his acting. In 1999, he was cast in a leading role by Srinu Vaitla for ''Nee Kosam'' co-starring Maheswari. The film was critically acclaimed and won the Silver Nandi for Best Film. Ravi Teja won the prestigious Nandi Award for Best Actor Special Jury for his performance. This was Ravi's first award. Following this, he started appearing in more significant roles such as Krishna Vamsi's ''Samudram'', Chiranjeevi's ''Annayya'' and ''Budget Padmanabham''. He also appeared in lead roles in multi-starrer films such as ''Kshemanga Velli Labanga Randi'', ''Tirumala Tirupathi Venkatesa'', ''Sakuntumba Sapari Vare Sametham'' and ''Ammayi Kosam''.

Lead roles and success (2001–2005)

In 2001, Ravi Teja's association with Puri Jagannadh began when the later cast Ravi as the lead role in ''Itlu Sravani Subramanyam''. The movie was a commercial hit and got Ravi Teja much required success as a solo lead actor. For the second time, Ravi Teja won the Nandi Special Jury Award for his performance. In 2002, his next film ''Avunu Valliddaru Ista Paddaru'', directed by Vamsy and co-starring Kalyani was released. The film was a successful at the box office and won Ravi lot of acclaim. The year also saw Ravi in ''Idiot''. Directed by Puri Jagannadh and co-starring Rakshita, the film was a blockbuster hit and Ravi's performance and dialogue delivery were praised by critics and movie-goers alike. With three consecutive successes, Ravi Teja became a big name in Telugu cinema.

The year also saw the release of Krishna Vamsi's ''Khadgam''. Ravi Teja was cast as one of the lead actors. The movie was a huge success at the box office and won Sarojini Devi Award for a Film on National Integration. Ravi's portrayal of a young wannabe actor won him the Nandi Special Jury Award for the third time. In 2003, Ravi again worked with director Puri Jagannadh for ''Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi''. The film co-starring Asin became a blockbuster hit. The year also saw Ravi working in commercially successful films like ''Dongodu'', co-starring Kalyani and directed by Bheemineni Srinivas and ''Veede'', co-starring Aarthi Agarwal and directed by Ravi Raja Pinisetty. In the same year, Ravi was also seen in films like ''Ee Abbayee Chala Manchodu'', ''Anveshana'' and ''Oka Raju Oka Rani'', which failed to do well at the box office.

In 2004, Raviteja was seen in ''Venky'', co-starring Sneha. The film was directed by Srinu Vaitla, who previously made the critically acclaimed ''Nee Kosam'' with Ravi. The film was commercially successful and was declared a hit. The same year saw Ravi acting in ''Naa Autograph'', co-starring Gopika and Bhumika Chawla. The film was directed by cinematographer turned director S. Gopal Reddy. It was successful at box office and Ravi won accolades for his performance in the film. The same year had Ravi in ''Chanti''. The film was directed by Sobhan and was a failure at the box office. In 2005, Ravi was seen in commercially successful hit ''Bhadra''. It was directed by Boyapati Srinu and Ravi was paired alongside Meera Jasmine. He was also seen in ''Bhageeratha'', directed by Rasool Ellore and co-starring Shriya Saran; the film performed well at the box office. He also worked in the crime film ''Shock'', directed by Harish Shankar and co-starring Jyothika and produced by Ram Gopal Varma, the film was unsuccessful at the box-office.

Commercial stardom (2006–2010)

In 2006, Raviteja worked with director S. S. Rajamouli for ''Vikramarkudu''. Co-starring Anushka Shetty, the film became a blockbuster hit. Later in 2006, Raviteja was seen in ''Khatarnak'', directed by Amma Rajasekhar and co-starring Ileana D'Cruz, the film was unsuccessful and bombed at the box office. In 2007, Raviteja was seen working for the third time with director Srinu Vaitla for ''Dubai Seenu''. Co-starring Nayantara, the film was very successful at the box office and was declared a hit. The year also Ravi doing a cameo in Chiranjeevi's ''Shankar Dada Zindabad''. In 2008, Raviteja was seen in the blockbuster hit ''Krishna''. Co-starring Trisha Krishnan and directed by V. V. Vinayak, the film was released for Sankranthi and performed very well at the box office. In August 2008, Raviteja was seen in ''Baladur''. The film was declared a flop and was unsuccessful at the box office. Later in the year, Ravi again collaborated with director Puri Jagganath for ''Neninthe''. Although the film was not successful at the box office, Ravi Teja's portrayal of an upcoming assistant director in the film won him the prestigious Nandi Award for Best Actor. This was Ravi's fourth time winning the Nandi award.

In 2010, he was seen in the multi-starrer ''Shambo Shiva Shambo'' alongside Allari Naresh, Siva Balaji and Priyamani — a remake of 2009 Tamil hit film ''Naadodigal''. The Telugu version was unsuccessful although Ravi won accolades for his performance. The year also saw Raviteja in the film ''Don Seenu'', directed by Gopichand Malineni. Co-starring Shriya Saran, it was very successful at the box office and was declared as one of the biggest hits of 2010.

"Mass Maharaja" and current work (2011–present)

In 2011, Ravi Teja was seen in blockbuster hit film ''Mirapakaay'', directed by Harish Shankar. Co-starring Richa Gangopadhyay and Deeksha Seth, it performed very well at the box office. Ravi was credited as "Mass Maharaja" for this film, implying his massive following in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh: "Mass Maharaj" Ravi Teja. The year had him acting in the experimental film ''Dongala Mutha'' under the direction of Ram Gopal Varma. With a crew of only eight people including Varma, filming was completed within five days and was made with a budget of 6.5 lakh budget. Later that year, Ravi Teja appeared in ''Veera'', directed by Ramesh Varma and co-starring Kajal Aggarwal and Taapsee Pannu. The film received mixed reviews and had an average run at the box office. He also did a cameo in Ram Gopal Varma's ''Katha Screenplay Darshakatvam Appalaraju''. In 2012, Ravi was seen in ''Nippu'' under the direction of Gunasekhar. Produced by YVS Chowdary and co-starring Deeksha Seth, the film was released on 17 February 2012. The film received mixed reviews upon release. The year will also see Ravi Teja in ''Daruvu'', directed by ''Souryam'' fame Shiva and co-starring Taapsee Pannu. The movie is scheduled to be released on 4 May 2012. Ravi Teja will collaborate again with Puri Jagannadh for the film ''Devudu Chesina Manushulu'', co-starring Ileana D'Cruz. The movie is expected to begin filming in March 2012 and be released in June 2012. Apart from these Ravi Teja will be seen in an untitled Venkat Prabhu project. It is said to have Ravi Teja as the other protagonist and belongs to the buddy cop genre.

Sunil Shetty (born 11 August 1961) is an Indian film actor, producer, hotelier and liquor and fashion boutique owner. He is mainly active in Bollywood.

Career

Shetty made his acting debut in the 1992 in the film ''Balwaan'', which was an average success. He gave 2 average grossers films in 1993 ''Pehchaan'' and ''Waqt Hamara Hai''. His first major blockbuster hit was the 1994 action thriller ''Mohra''. Later that year he also had another hit with the romantic drama film ''Dilwale'' and average success ''Gopi Kishan''. He went on to star in many films throughout the 1990s mostly in the action genre. In 1997, his film ''Bhai'' released on Diwali was a success despite coinciding with Shahrukh Khans ''Dil To Pagal Hai''. In 1997. he got recognition for his role in the war epic ''Border''. He went on to play patriotic roles in films such as ''Refugee'' (2001), ''Qayamat: City Under Threat'' (2003) and ''LOC Kargil'' (2003). He also ventured into comedy roles in hit films such as ''Hera Pheri'' (2000), ''Awara Paagal Deewana'' (2002), ''Phir Hera Pheri'' (2006) and ''De Dana Dan'' (2009). He won a Filmfare Award for Best Villain in 2001 for his performance in ''Dhadkan'' (2000). He also won SAIFF (South Asia International Film Festival) 2009 as a Best Actor for the film ''Red Alert: The War Within''.

As a producer, he set up a production company called Popcorn Motion Pictures Ltd, which produced the films ''Khel – No Ordinary Game'' (2003), ''Rakht: What If You Can See the Future'' and ''Bhagam Bhag'' (2006). In recent years he has mostly played small roles in multi-starred films. Besides Bollywood he appeared in the English film ''Don't Stop Dreaming'' in 2007 and the Tamil film ''12B''. He also hosted Biggest Loser Jeetega on Sahara One. In 2010, he starred in ''Daddy Cool'', ''De Dana Dan'', and ''No Problem'', whereas in 2011, he only starred in ''Thank You'', which was a box office average.

His latest release is ''Loot''. He is currently working on films, ''Chai Garam''

Sunil Shetty is now also captain of the Mumbai Heroes cricket team in the Celebrity cricket league.

Personal life

Sunil Shetty was born in a ethnic Bunt family on 11 August 1961 in Mulki, India He also owns some hotels specializing in Udupi cuisine (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) and a clothing boutique named Mischief and has launched a company called Popcorn Entertainment to promote Bollywood actors touring abroad for stage shows and/or concerts.

He is married to Mana Shetty and has two children called Ahan and Athiya. He is often called as the He-Man of the Indian Bollywood industry. He has a Black Belt in Kick Boxing.

Vinod Khanna (, Punjabi: ਵਿਨੋਦ ਖੰਨਾ born 6 October 1946) is an Indian actor, film producer and politician.

Early life

Khanna was born in Peshawar to Kamla and Kishanchand Khanna, a textiles, dyes and chemicals businessman of Khatri origin, on 6 October 1946, in Peshawar, British India (now in Pakistan). He has three sisters and one brother. Shortly after his birth, India was partitioned and the family left Peshawar and reached Mumbai (then Bombay).

At Mumbai, he attended Queen Mary School, Bombay (Mumbai) until class II and then transferred to St. Xavier's High School, Fort. In 1957, the family again moved to Delhi where he attended Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. Although the family moved back to Mumbai in 1960, he was sent to Barnes School in Deolali, near Nashik. It was during his time at the boarding school that he watched the epic ''Mughal-e-Azam'' and fell in love with motion pictures. He graduated with a commerce degree from Sydenham College.

Career

Vinod Khanna debuted in Sunil Dutt's 1968 film ''Man Ka Meet'' as a villain. He acted in multi-starrer films often playing supporting and negative roles in hit films such as ''Purab Aur Paschim'' (1970), ''Sachaa Jhutha'' (1970) and ''Mera Gaon Mera Desh'' (1971). His big break was in the 1971 film ''Mere Apne'' directed by Gulzar. His performance as an army officer facing death row in another Gulzar scripted and directed 1973 film ''Achanak'' was critically acclaimed. The songless film echoed the true life story of K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra and Khanna portrayed Kawas Nanavati, the real life Navy officer.

He went on to star in many hits throughout the mid 1970s and early 1980s, including "Inkaar", "Aap Ki Khatir", "Aarop", ''Parvarish'' (1977), ''Amar Akbar Anthony'' (1977), ''Khoon Pasina'' (1977), " Herapheri", ''Muqaddar Ka Sikander'' (1978), "((Zameer")), ''The Burning Train'' (1980) and ''Qurbani'' (1980). Having peaked in Bollywood, he became a follower of the spiritual teacher Osho (Rajneesh) and left the film industry in 1979 for eight years. At this time, he was one of the most successful actors in the Bollywood, competing with Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna (Kudrat), (Aan Milo Sajna) & Jeetendra. He rejoined the industry, eight years later in mid 1980s. He continued to appear in many notable films from the mid 1980s to the 1990s such as ''Dayavan'' (1988), ''Chandni'' (1989), ''Kshatriya'' (1993), ''Eena Meena Deeka'' (1994) and ''Ekka Raja Rani'' (1994).

His pairing with Amitabh Bachchan was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

In 1997 he donned the role of producer to launch his middle son Akshaye Khanna in the film ''Himalay Putra''; he also starred in the film. In 1999 he received a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the film industry for over three decades. He has since acted in fewer films playing character roles. His most recent films were ''Deewaanapan'' (2002), ''Risk'' (2007)'', Wanted'' (2009) and ''Dabangg'' (2010).

He also ventured into television playing the male lead role of "Kashi Nath" in the Smriti Irani-produced Hindi serial ''Mere Apne'', which aired on the channel 9X.

In 1997, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected from Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab in the next year's Lok Sabha poll. In 1999, he was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from the same constituency. Later, he became union minister for culture and tourism in July 2002. Six months later, he was moved to the more important ministry of external affairs (MEA) as minister of state. In 2004 he won re-election from Gurdaspur. However, he lost out in the 2009 Lok Sabha poll.

Personal life

Khanna married Geetanjali in 1971, and has two sons with her, Rahul Khanna and Akshaye Khanna; both are Hindi film actors. In 1975, Khanna became a disciple of Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). In the early 1980s, he moved to Rajneeshpuram, Osho's commune in the United States, for four years, cleaning dishes and working as Osho's gardener. His absence from his family, who remained behind in India, caused friction between the couple, and the marriage ended in divorce.

In 1990, he married his second wife, Kavita. They have a son, Sakshi, and a daughter Shraddha.

Shahid Kapoor (born 25 February 1981) is an Indian actor who appears in Bollywood films. He is also a trained dancer.

Starting off his career by working in music videos and advertisements, Kapoor made his Bollywood debut as a background dancer in Subhash Ghai's ''Taal'' (1999). Four years later, he made his acting debut in ''Ishq Vishk'' (2003) and won a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for his performance. Following through with films like ''Fida'' (2004) and ''Shikhar'' (2005), he had his first major commercial success with Sooraj R. Barjatya's ''Vivah'' (2006), his biggest commercial success, and followed it up with ''Jab We Met'' (2007) and ''Kaminey'' (2009), both of which earned him Best Actor nominations at the Filmfare ceremony, along with moderate commercial successes such as ''36 China Town'' (2006), ''Chup Chup Ke'' (2006) and ''Badmaash Company'' (2010).

Early life

Kapoor was born to actor Pankaj Kapoor and actor/classical dancer Neelima Azeem on 25 February 1981. Kapoor's parents divorced when he was 3. After the divorce, he lived with his mother and maternal grandparents in Junaghad. He shared a good relationship with his father and stepmother Supriya Pathak. As far as his religious affiliation is concerned, Kapoor has stated in an interview that while his father is a Sikh and his mother is a Muslim, both his parents have taught him that he "should look at all religions without hatred and have compassion for every human being whatever his religion may be," saying that he believes that "there is one God up above."

As a child, he studied in Rajhans Vidyalaya, Mumbai. He has three half siblings: a sister named Sanah and brothers named Ruhaan and Ishaan Khattar; Ishaan acted with him in the movie ''Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi'' (2005). His maternal grandfather was Anwar Azeem, a noted Marxist journalist and author from Bihar. His great great grandfather was the film director, screenwriter, Urdu novelist and journalist Khwaja Ahmad Abbas more popularly known as K. A. Abbas. His mother Neelima is the daughter of Anwar Azeem, one of the greatest Urdu writers. K.A. Abbas in turn was the grandson of Hali, the chief protégé of Urdu poet, Ghalib.

Career

Early career, until 2005

Before starting off his career as an actor, Kapoor worked in several music videos and ads, including the Pepsi commercial with Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji post ''Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'' (1998) and the music video ''Aankhon Me Tera Hi Chehra'' by the Aryans along with Hrishitaa Bhatt. While doing so, he decided to join the Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts (SDIPA), where he was later seen in Subhash Ghai's film ''Taal'' (1999) as a background dancer in the song ''Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jawe'' along with actress Aishwarya Rai.

In 2003, Kapoor played his first leading role as Rajiv Mathur, a carefree young man in Ken Ghosh's moderately successful love story ''Ishq Vishk''. Appearing opposite Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala, the film was well received by audiences and Kapoor's performance earned him a Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. Film critic Taran Adarsh from ''indiaFM'' wrote, "Shahid Kapoor is an actor to watch. He has all the qualities to hit the top slot. Not only is he good looking, but he is an amazing performer as well. Very original as a performer [sic], the youngster has handled the dramatic and emotional moments with flourish. He is an exceptional dancer as well. All he needs to do is pick and choose his forthcoming assignments with care, so that the journey to the top slot is minus hiccups."

The following year, Kapoor joined once again with director Ken Ghosh in the thriller ''Fida'', where he co-starred alongside Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. The film failed to do well at the box office, yet Kapoor's performance was praised. ''The Tribune'' concluded, "...Shahid Kapoor shines in his role. He looks fresh. As an impulsive emotional and innocent guy, who is sucked into crime because of these very qualities, he manages to evoke your sympathies." He then appeared in the romantic comedy ''Dil Maange More'' opposite Soha Ali Khan, Tulip Joshi, and Ayesha Takia. His performance opened to mixed reviews; Rediff.com wrote that "Shahid tends to imitate Shahrukh Khan a lot. He does it well in some scenes, overdoes it in others..."

Featuring in three more films in 2005, success continued to elude Kapoor. However, his performance as Jaidev Vardhan, a man who is sucked into the world of money and greed in John M. Matthan's drama ''Shikhar'' was critically acclaimed, earning Kapoor his first Star Screen Award for Best Actor nomination. According to ''IndiaFM'', "Shahid Kapoor is only improving with every film. He matches up to Ajay in almost all sequences."

Breakthrough, 2006–present

In 2006, Kapoor starred in ''36 China Town''. Revolving around the story of seven individuals and a murder, the film became a moderate success despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. Shortly after the release of the film, Kapoor's second release of the year, Priyadarshan's comedy ''Chup Chup Ke'', followed. The film became a moderate success at the box office.

Kapoor's last release of 2006 was Sooraj R. Barjatya's romantic drama ''Vivah'', a film depicting the journey of two individuals from engagement to marriage. Co-starring alongside Amrita Rao, the film was received favourably by most critics and became one of the highest grossing films of the year as well as Kapoor's second biggest commercial success to date. Kapoor's performance earned his second consecutive nomination for ''Best Actor'' at the Star Screen Awards. Taran Adarsh wrote, "Shahid Kapoor performs like never before. If he was super-cool in ''Ishq Vishk'' and showed flashes of brilliance in ''Fida'', you've to watch him in ''Vivah'' to see his growth as a tremendous actor. He is exceptional in emotional sequences."

During the summer of 2006, Kapoor embarked on his first world tour, the ''Rockstars Concert'', along with Bollywood stars, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, John Abraham, Esha Deol, Mallika Sherawat and Zayed Khan.

In 2007, Kapoor appeared in two movies. His first release was Ahmed Khan's ''Fool and Final''. The film received negative reviews and failed to do well at the box office; Kapoor's performance in the film did not receive positive reviews. His next release, Imtiaz Ali's comedy-romance ''Jab We Met'', opposite Kareena Kapoor, became one of the biggest hits of the year. The film tells the story of two people with two very different personalities meeting each other on a train and how they fall in love eventually. Kapoor portrayed the character of Aditya Kashyap, a dejected young industrialist full of angst and despair. The film was well-received by critics and Kapoor's performance earned him several nominations for Best Actor at a number of award ceremonies, including Filmfare. Rajeev Masand from ''CNN-IBN'' noted, "Despite the risk of being overshadowed by Kareena, his co-star in the film, Shahid Kapur leaves an indelible impression with a performance that is understated and mature, and indeed the perfect foil to Kareena's boisterousness." Kapoor then appeared in the Aziz Mirza-directed film, ''Kismat Konnection'' (2008), opposite Vidya Balan. Upon release, the film under-performed at the box office.

In 2009, Kapoor portrayed the dual role of twins Charlie and Guddu in the caper thriller, ''Kaminey''. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film was a critical and commercial success and received mostly positive reviews. Kapoor's performance was also critically acclaimed. Rajeev Masand from ''CNN-IBN'' wrote, "Shahid Kapur rises to the challenge of creating two entirely different characters out of Charlie and Guddu, and delivers a credible performance as each. Breaking out of his chocolate-boy image, he gives evidence of his potential when trusted with well-written roles." Later in the year, Kapoor appeared alongside Rani Mukerji in Anurag Singh's romantic comedy ''Dil Bole Hadippa!'', which failed to do well at the Indian box office.

In 2010, Kapoor appeared in Ken Ghosh's film ''Chance Pe Dance'' opposite Genelia D'Souza, in which he portrayed the role of a struggling Bollywood actor. The movie received poor review from critics, but Kapoor's performance was well received. He then starred in Ahmed Khan's ''Paathshala'' in a extended cameo alongside Ayesha Takia and Nana Patekar. This was then followed by Yash Raj Films ''Badmaash Company'' which was released on 7th May 2010 and opened mixed to positive reviews and was an above average success at the box office and his performance in the film was received well too. His last release of the year was the long delayed Satish Kaushik's ''Milenge Milenge''.

In 2011, Kapoor appeared opposite Sonam Kapoor in ''Mausam'' (2011), a movie directed and written by Pankaj Kapoor. The film received mixed to positive response from critics, however his performance was generally well received. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote, "Shahid gives his all to this role, submitting himself to his director-father to mould him the way he chooses to. It won't be erroneous to state that Shahid surpasses all his previous performances, including the one in ''Kaminey'', with this film. The film also marks the coming of age of this actor." His upcoming venture, ''Teri Meri Kahaani'' opposite Priyanka Chopra is expected for release on 22 June, 2012.

Personal life

Kapoor identifies himself as a vegetarian. While filming ''Fida'' (2004), he began dating Kareena Kapoor. They separated during the filming of ''Jab We Met'' (2007). According to him, they remained on good terms, with him saying, "I wish her all the happiness in the world. I have great respect for her. She is a wonderful girl."
